Statewide Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge Tour & Wildlife Survey Event

Join Stewards of the Wild for an exclusive tour and wildlife survey event at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge on August 1, 2026! 

Less than 30 minutes from downtown Fort Worth and sitting at a crossroads of several ecoregions, the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge (FWNCR) is a natural area consisting of preserved forests, prairies, and wetlands and spans more than 3,600 acres. One of the largest city-owned nature centers in the country, FWNCR is an incredible place for the community to learn about our wild things and wild places. 

Each summer, FWNCR biologists conduct alligator and white-tailed deer surveys to gather valuable data that helps monitor local biodiversity and guide management and conservation strategies. Hosted by the SCC Game Species Subcommittee, we invite you to join Stewards from across the state for a day of hands-on education and experience. We'll learn directly from FWNCR staff and biologists managing the property, tour the wetlands by boat (shorebirds, alligators, and other wildlife), and take part in a white-tailed deer survey after the sun goes down. We also hope to see the iconic Bison herd.

Please take note this event occurs in the afternoon and evening. We will provide you with dinner and hydrating drinks, but lodging is not included. While the wetlands tour and survey activity will take place outdoors, we will make use of an air-conditioned pavilion for the other portions of the event. There is plenty of great lodging in Fort Worth. Please let us know if you need recommendations. 

Limited spots are available! Registration is currently open to SOTW members, and may open to non-members if spots remain.

We encourage anyone to sign up that:

• Wants to experience the a Texas ecoregion where forest transition to great plains as it was before development in the early 20th century

• Is curious about wildlife management and how data informs conservation decisions

• Is excited to participate in a night-time wildlife survey (Note: no experience required. Participants will potentially ride in UTVs to conduct the survey, which may not be fully enclosed.)

Agenda:

• 3:30-4:15 p.m. Arrival, meet & greet, and welcome
• 4:30-6:30 p.m. Marsh tour by boat
• 7-8:30 p.m. BBQ dinner
• 8:30-10 p.m. White-tailed deer survey
• 10-10:30 p.m. Survey debrief & departure 

Participant gear list:

• Field shoes/boots comfortable for a boat and vehicle
• Sunscreen & insect repellant 
• Long sleeves & pants recommended 
• Hat & sunglasses
• Plenty of water

Cancellation Policy: Cancel 4 weeks in advance of event, receive a full refund. Cancel 2-4 weeks in advance of event, receive 50% refund. Cancel less than 2 weeks in advance of event, receive no refund.
